The Texas State Champion Homemade Ice Cream Freezeoff began in the year 2000. The Freezeoff is held in conjunction with the annual "Hopkins County Dairy Festival" which began in 1959 and is a celebration of the importance of the dairy industry in Hopkins County.
 
New State Champion.......James Ross Jr. is the new Texas State Champion Homemade Ice Cream Freeze-Off winner. Judged champion at the 7th annual Texas State Champion Homemade Ice Cream Freezeoff in Sulphur Springs, Texas on Saturday, June 14, 2008
 
A Dairy Festival Parade, street dance, Queen Contest, hot air balloon rally and the Ice Cream Freezeoff are always held on the second weekend in June. The 2003 "Texas State Champion Homemade Ice Cream Freezeoff" was featured on the Food Network's "All American Festivals" segment in 2004.
